Literacy Volunteers of East Bay
Literacy Volunteers of East Bay (LVEB) provides one-to-one tutoring and small group classes for adults. We provide free help with: reading and writing, math skills, speaking English, GED preparation, basic computer skills and citizenship. These services are free and confidential.
Who We Serve
LVEB helps adult learners who find regular classroom learning difficult. This format offers individualized instruction, encourages active involvement, ensures immediate corrective feedback, builds a strong rapport between tutor and adult learner, and is flexible, since adult learners and tutors set their own meeting place and times. This level of personal attention is especially helpful for students with learning differences.
Learners can also get a one-to-one tutor if they are enrolled in a GED class or job-training class and would like some extra help.
To get a tutor, you must be at least 18 years old, live or work in East Providence or any city or town in Bristol or Newport County, and not have a high-school diploma or equivalent, a degree from a U.S. college or university or be in college. You also must, be able to get to class via private or public transportation, be ready to do school work and meet with your tutor in a public space.
Key Features
We deliver tutoring services through one-on-one learning sessions with a trained volunteer tutor. Your tutor will meet with you at a local library or other public space twice a week. In addition to these sessions, adult learners can use computer labs for independent work such as skill-building in English, math or computer basics.
