An Even Start in Newport

Even Start is a family literacy and adult education program. Since 1996, Even Start in Newport has provided services throughout Aquidneck Island. Even Start in Newport provides adult education classes for participants to improve their literacy while also preparing for job training and employment. Programs offered include Adult Education, Interactive Literary support, Parent Education, Life Skills and Computer Classes.

Who We Serve

Even Start in Newport’s mission is to assist families in the East Bay who are disadvantaged by language and/or education obstacles. By offering intensive, integrated family literary and support services, Even Start provides parents and their children with the skills and tools necessary to be self-reliant. The program inspires parents to become the most effective and important teachers in their children’s lives. As a result, each family member will embrace the value of education and contribute to our community.

Potential students may enroll as long as they need either Adult Basic Education (ABE) or General Education Development (GED) or English as a Second Language (ESL). Participants may also enter the program at 17 years old, as long as they are authorized to leave the public school system.

Key Features of the Program

Even Start in Newport is an approved vendor for RI Works and is authorized to provide services to parents that are in need of a 10-20 hour a week educational program. Even Start offers ABE and GED classes, ESL classes, workplace literary classes, parenting workshops and early childhood education.
